Family-Friendly Literacy Activities to Empower Families as Readers

We know that reading more makes better readers.  As families, we can impact our children’s literacy skills in a positive way.  In our busy lives, we ask ourselves how can we do meaningful activities at home to build our children’s literacy skills because we do not have the time to plan added activities.

Each week for the rest of this year, I will give you one simple activity that you can do with your children that will empower them to be successful readers. It is my challenge that you will implement this one simple activity each week and let me know how you made it work for your family.  I will be featuring your feedback in future blogs.

This week’s family-friendly literacy activity:

READ TOGETHER!  OR SEPARATELY! Really, just read.

Children will do what they see their role models doing.  If your children see you reading, they will want to read also.  Setting this positive example of reading will emphasize that reading is a natural and valuable part of every day life.  Reading to smaller children will model fluency, expression and pronunciation.

Of course you can talk about what you read, but take the first big step this week and read to your children or encourage them to read with you.

Join me next week for another family-friendly literacy activity.
